Lesson on PreEclampsia: Symptoms, Pathophysiology and Treatment. PreEclampsia is a serious obstetrical condition characterized by gestational hypertension with new onset proteinuria and/or other adverse conditions such as thrombocytopenia, newonset headache and/or vision changes. Preeclampsia has a variety of risk factors including advanced maternal age, previous history of preeclampsia, family history, obesity and having preexisting conditions such as lupus. Preeclampsia is important to recognize and treat due to adverse outcomes of nontreatment including fetal demise and maternal endorgan damage. Various causes have been proposed to explain why preeclampsia occurs, including abnormal placentation and failure to remodel spiral arteries. Upon diagnosis of preeclampsia, treatment involves the use of antihypertensives including labetalol.
