It’s roughly somewhat similar to how it’s spoken in casual English: As two numbers combined. That is, instead of signing the full number \”Two thousand eighteen\”, the sign for \”2018\” is a combination of the numbers \”20\” and \”18\”. The same goes for years in the twentieth century: 1975 would be \”19\” followed by \”75\”. Of course, don’t really pause between the numbers they combine into one new sign.

It was more commonplace to simply see \”19+\” for the 1900s, \”18+\” for the 1800s, and so on, but in the new millenium, there’s been a bit more variation:
The year \”2000\” was signed with a \”2\” and then three small \”o\”s, dragged in a row.
In the early 2000s, the year was signed by the number 2\”, then a double \”oo\”, and then the number. \”2oo1\”, \”2oo2\”, and so on.
Beginning in 2010, it finally became more possible to return to the old format of two numbers combined, like \”20^10\”, \”20^12\”, and so on. Some signers picked up that format, while a few others retained the new \”2oo\” movement before the last two digits, so \”2oo11\” or \”2oo15\”, or even just a \”2\” movement from up to palmdown and then the year.

The video above should make these variations a bit more clear. If looking for one sign for 2018, I suggest using the \”20^18\” format.

Why you should make useless things | Simone Giertz

In this joyful, heartfelt talk featuring demos of her wonderfully wacky creations, Simone Giertz shares her craft: making useless robots. Her inventions designed to chop vegetables, cut hair, apply lipstick and more rarely (if ever) succeed, and that’s the point. \”The true beauty of making useless things [is] this acknowledgment that you don’t always know what the best answer is,\” Giertz says. \”It turns off that voice in your head that tells you that you know exactly how the world works. Maybe a toothbrush helmet isn’t the answer, but at least you’re asking the question.\”
